GUWAHATI: To raise awareness and mobilize global action to address air pollution, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi (LGBI) Airport celebrated 'International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies' at the airport premises.

According to a press release, the programme started with a plantation drive at 11am followed by a felicitation programme and discussion on the aims and objectives of the programme.

CAO Utpal Baruah, Dr Shantanu Kumar Dutta (Member- Secretary PCBA), Dr S Gokhale (professor of IIT Guwahati and Nodal Faculty of NCAP Assam), Megh Nidhi Dahal (Commissioner, GMC), Dr KG Bhattacharya (retired professor of Guwahati University and renowned environmentalist), Ashim Saikia (Mayor in Council, sanitation, public Health & Environment Division, GMC), Manjoy Saikia (ACES & Nodal officer, NCAP, PCBA), and officials of the airport and pollution control board were present on the occasion.

The dignitaries spoke about the need to raise public awareness at all levels - individual, community, corporate and Government - about the fact that clean air is important for health, productivity and for the environment. Utpal Baruah in his speech highlighted that air pollution knows no national borders and is all pervasive. Moreover, it is strongly correlated to other global crisis such as climate change, biodiversity loss, other forms of pollution, social and gender parity as well as economic development. Shantanu Kumar Dutta also mentioned the impact of aviation on emissions of air quality and the role of industrialization in air pollution. Notably, this is the third International Day of Clean Air for blue skies under the theme of 'The Air We Share'. It focuses on the transboundary nature of air pollution, highlighting the need for collective accountability and collective action.
